Custom MC Vest Patches: Everything You Need to Know

Patch placement, rockers, center logos, and the unwritten rules — a complete guide to ordering a custom motorcycle club vest the right way.

Staghide Rider's Guide  ·  9 min read  ·  Motorcycle & Biker

For a motorcycle club rider, the vest isn't just gear — it's identity. The patches you carry, where they sit, and how they're arranged tell a story to anyone who knows how to read it. Getting it right matters.

Whether you're ordering your first custom vest or adding to an existing one, this guide covers everything: the patch placement system, the different types of patches, the rules to respect, and how to order a custom vest that's built exactly the way you want it.

"Your patches are earned, chosen, and worn with intent. The vest that carries them should be built with the same care."

Understanding the Patch Layout

Motorcycle club vests follow a recognised patch placement system. While individual clubs have their own specific rules, the general layout is consistent across the biker world. Here's how it breaks down:

  • 01
    Center Back — Club Logo
The large circular or shield-shaped patch in the center of the back is the club's primary identifier — the club logo or insignia. This is the most important patch and the visual anchor of the whole vest.
  • 02
    Top Rocker
The curved patch above the center logo (the "rocker") typically displays the club name. The top rocker is one of the most significant patches and is often reserved for full club members only.
  • 03
    Bottom Rocker
The curved patch below the center logo usually shows the club's location or territory — city, state, or region. Together, the top rocker, center logo, and bottom rocker form what's known as the "three-piece patch."
  • 04
    Front Patches
The front of the vest carries smaller patches — name tags, rank or title (President, VP, Road Captain, etc.), and smaller club identifiers. These are positioned on the chest, typically upper left and right.
  • 05
    Side Rockers & Additional Patches
Side rockers, support patches, year tabs, and memorial patches fill in the remaining space. Placement of these varies by club and personal preference.

Types of Patches

Patches come in several styles, each with different looks, durability, and cost. Here are the main types you'll choose between:

Embroidered Patches

The classic choice. Thread stitched directly into a backing fabric. Durable, textured, and traditional. Holds up to years of riding and weather. The standard for most club patches.

Direct Embroidery

Embroidered straight onto the leather itself rather than a separate patch. Cleaner, more permanent, and can't peel or lift at the edges. Ideal for names, titles, and logos.

Leather Patches

Patches made from leather with embossed or laser-etched designs. Premium look that matches the vest material. Excellent for a cohesive, high-end aesthetic.

Chenille / Woven Patches

Textured patches often used for larger designs and lettering. Bold, raised appearance. Less common on MC vests but used for some club styles and varsity-inspired looks.

The Unwritten Rules

If you ride with or alongside a motorcycle club, there are patch etiquette rules worth respecting. Breaking them — even unknowingly — can cause real friction. The big ones:

  • 01
    Don't Wear a Three-Piece Patch You Haven't Earned
The full three-piece patch (top rocker + center + bottom rocker) signifies membership in an established club. Don't replicate the layout of an existing club or wear one you're not entitled to. For independent riders, a single center patch is the respectful choice.
  • 02
    Respect Territory Rockers
Bottom rockers showing a specific territory carry meaning in the club world. Independent riders generally avoid territory-style bottom rockers to prevent any implication of club affiliation.
  • 03
When in Doubt, Keep It Personal
If you're not part of a club, personalise your vest with your name, your interests, your own designs — not club-style insignia. A custom vest can be entirely your own without referencing club structures at all.
Note for Independent Riders

You don't need to be in a club to own a great custom vest. Many riders order custom vests with personal designs, names, and artwork that have nothing to do with club structures. The customisation options are the same — just designed around you.
